چکیده

Background: Beta-thalassemia is an autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy with frequent skeletal complications, often debilitating in adolescent patients. We aim to evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and ascertain osteoporosis/osteopenia frequency patients β-thalassemia major. Methodology:  In this cross-sectional study, 36 major were enrolled from June 2015 March 2017.  BMD was measured anteroposterior lumbar spine (L1-L4) femoral neck DEXA. For biochemical estimations, blood urine samples obtained analyzed. The results of a test presented as T Z scores. Bone Mineral Density in β Thalassemia Major and Intermedia, Correlation with Biochemical and Hormonal Profiles

Background: Expansion of bone marrow cavity and decreased cortical and trabecular bone tissues and osteoporosis are resulted from beta-thalassemia. The aim of this study was to assess bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with β thalassemia major and intermedia, and to determine their biochemical and hormonal profiles that may affect BMD. Materials and Methods: In a cross sectional study from ...

Relation between bone mineral density and serum ferritin levels in patients with thalassemia major

Background: Thalassemia/haemoglobinopathy is a hereditary disease with increased erythropoiesis and expansion of the bone marrow cavity. Consequently, there is a reduction in trabecular bone tissue resulting in osteopenia/osteoporosis. The present study was performed to determine bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents with major thalassemia and its correlation with serum fer...

Serum Dickkopf-1 and Correlation with Bone Mineral Density in Patients with Beta Thalassemia Major in North-Eastern of Iran

Background and Aims: Iron overload is one of the effects of frequent transfusion in beta-thalassemia major (BTM) patients. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are the secondary complications of frequent transfusion due to toxic effects of iron on osteoblasts. Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) is a secreted protein which plays an important role in the development of osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investiga...
